“Someday I would like to
stand on the moon, look
down through a quarter of a
million miles of space and
say, "There certainly is a
beautiful earth out tonight.”
—Lt. Col. William H. Rankin, American author
The urban sky, unlike its suburban and rural neighbors, is a clamorous
thing: noisy with the light of skyscraper towers and the streaks of
passing airplanes. Its clouds veil the stars and reflect a detritus of
smoke and cinders, neon lights and factory fluorescents. Each city has
its signature sky: picture Las Vegas then San Francisco. Compare them
to the New York skies.
The artworks of Nicholas Evans-Cato, Ed Fausty, Kay Kenny, Jessica
Lenard, and Lynn Saville focus on and celebrate the city sky as an
inverse portrait of the city below, using it as a vast framing device
for the clutter of urban geography or turning our eyes to the drama in
the highways above.
